Private Conversation w/ Greed

Who: Greed and Clay
Where: Greed's room
What: Being assigned as partners, Greed and Clay plan out an action plan for the upcoming trial.
(7:12:38 PM) zeaob: [Provided that Greed is in his room while the rest of the group are out investigating, he'll be treated to the dulcet sounds of banging and kicking at his door.]
Come ooon, open up! It's Clay; you've got to let me in!
[His voice betrays panic and why not, someone had been killed. Not everyone can handle out and out murder rationally or with any level of detachment.]
(7:15:29 PM) ninael88: [Really, the noise isn't needed. He would have responded to a quiet knock on the door. As is, Greed opens after a moment, looking unhappy, but he's here. He's been sitting on the edge of his bed just content being alone for the moment, but nods when he sees the man.] Shouting is probably not the smartest thing you could be doing right now. [So he's going to usher Clay inside before someone sees them.]
(7:29:09 PM) zeaob: [Clay rushes in just as the door opens. He's hunched over and jittery, not in the least calm like when they first met. Too anxious to sit down, he just stands there in place.]
We don't have time NOT to panic! She- she was killed just like that, in the dead of the night. One of -them- out there, they killed her... [He turns back and gives the door behind him a glare brimming with disdain. His face returns to one of desperation as he faces Greed again.]
Now those red bastards made a new friend to boot and darned if we know just who it could be! You're the only one I can trust here- what're we supposed to do, I can't deal with this..!
(7:36:36 PM) ninael88: [Greed's brows raise. In direct contrast, he's calm and collected, like the murder hasn't bothered him at all. And to be frank, it hasn't. Not really. He's seen far worse.]
Of course someone was killed. That's the whole point of this. It if wasn't her, it was going to be someone else. It could very well have been you or I with an arrow in the chest.
[It's not like he doesn't understand Clay's problem. This is a normal human reaction; that much Greed knows. He's the strange one here, acting like it's no big deal at all. Clay's rambling doesn't make any sense to him-- 'red bastards?' What the hell does that mean?
But it's not important, not at the moment.]
It's simple. Kill or be killed. The two of us, we're in a unique position. Someone gets suspicious about one of us, decides he needs to go, the other is going to take the fall. So I need you to calm down. Do you know something about the communists?
(7:56:16 PM) zeaob: How is it that none of you know what communists are? Like I told the de... our recently deceased friend, communists hate us for our freedoms.
[It's really the only proper description he could give them given his background.]
They want to kill us and or take away the money we've worked hard for in our stinking dead end jobs so that everyone gets a "fair share". [His eyes roll, he makes fluttering gestures with his hands, and his tone is drowning in sarcasm.]
Our blessed, capitalist nation has been containing the Red's evil influence for decades and decades, and if that meant supporting some local tyrants here and there, so be it. You can't get freedom without some restrictions, after all! [He smiles and looks on with some pride. Everything he says, he believes entirely.]
... I just didn't think it would ever come to something like this, not in my dank life. [Seeing a chair, Clay motions to it and sits.] So it looks like we're in this together, then. If either of us dies, the other dies. That's the cost of knowing for certain neither of us will be the ones to kill each other.
(8:08:52 PM) ninael88: [His brows raise once again, giving a cold, cold look.]
It sounds to me like those who were chosen to be the sheep sent to slaughter and those who were chosen to be these "communists" are completely random. You could just have easily been deemed a 'communist' as not.
[It's plenty of terms he's never heard of before. What the hell is a capitalist nation? What do communists have to do with the color red? And 'can't get freedom without restrictions?' It sounds like nothing short of some bizarre cult to him.
It's the kind of thing 'she' would do, it's the kind of life he used to live himself. But he won't say his piece yet, sitting down on the bed and staring at the man.
Greed is a creature entirely out for himself, not caring about the livelihood of anyone else, but that's not something he can rely on here. Like it or not, he has to depend on Clay, at least somewhat. It's unfortunate..]
You need to stop seeing this situation as "us" versus "them" and start seeing for what it actually is: "you" versus "everyone else." You can't trust anyone else. Not that teenage girl who tried to camp out in the hallway, not that girl with the strange chimera, not that man with the hair that sticks straight up. You can't trust any of them.
(8:29:47 PM) zeaob: I hope not! I can't stand vodka, haha... Whiskey man all the way!
[His outward anxieties are more pronounced and Clay begins scratching the sides of his arms through his sleeves. God he wishes he had a drink. But he listens and for the most part, Greed... has a point. His words resonate with the man's deeper self-serving nature. That's right. Even if they were on the 'same side', who's to say they wouldn't throw him under the bridge?]
... Yeah. You know what? Yeah, that's right. Someone already turned, and who's to say none of those cowards out there won't think of doing the same the next chance they get!
[Clay's hands ball up into fists.]
There never was an 'us' here all along! It's just me against them, and yeah, that's how I like it! Nothing but a bunch of wolves and jackals out there, thinking they're worth living more than I am... Mr. Greed, it seems like you've opened my eyes to what's really going on here.
[His hands relax. A sense of... serenity returns. If you look at it another way, the girl's death... was a good thing. That means less competition, whether or not she wasn't a communist. Clay's mind adapts, rewiring to fit its current predicament... and justifies the existence of a darker part inside of him that puts him at odds with others around him. The ingrates.]
(8:44:55 PM) ninael88: Vodka? What does vodka have to do with a game where the goal is to kill people?
[Greed, for his part, is still perfectly calm. He doesn't see the point in acting nervous or panicking, not now. Not when everything could go to shit immediately and then where would he be? Dead, probably.
Again.]
We don't know the circumstances in which this happened. I'd be careful about who you call a coward.
[A game of life and death is something he can deal with. It's not like he wants to die. Being stabbed is a nasty way to go out, but he also knows everyone here is out for the same thing: their own survival.]
That's exactly it.
Everyone is an enemy until proven otherwise. Even then, each and every one of them, "citizen" or "communist" would happily throw you to the wolves if it meant a chance of them living for another day. Trust no one. Assume kindness is an act. It's the only way to live.
[It's a harsh lesson to teach. But it's a lesson Greed learned long ago.]
(8:51:17 PM) zeaob: Of course, we'll be holding each other to a higher standard of trust. I mean, if you die, I die! And I don't want that!
[Clay, stating the obvious.]
... It's hardly different from daily life if you think about it. Can't look behind your back without someone judging you, waiting for their moment to take what's yours... [He says this all with a narrow smile. Something inside him has come to an 'understanding' about the world. It was simpler here, in ways.]
(9:05:05 PM) ninael88: That's right. We have no choice but to rely on each other.
[It's not too difficult of a thing to say. He might even believe it. It's not like he has any interest at all in betraying the man, even if he is strange and not someone that Greed would want to rely on normally.
But then again, the last person he had completely put his faith into had...
No, it's best not to think about. He smiles, it's off, and shows off just enough of his teeth that it's probably alarming, but it's not meant to be threatening.]
You and I have very different ideas of what constitutes daily life, I'm afraid to say.
[But one thing he does understand is greed and the selfish desire for people to keep what they consider their own.]
(9:14:43 PM) zeaob: Yeah, I bet. It's tedium at its finest, but hey, it's yours... it's the only one you've got.
[He says it with a strong level of disdain.]
... You know the trial's going to start later today. What're we supposed to do about that? Everyone's just slipping over that girl's blood trail, I'd like to see how much of them can even make it to the bench...
(9:40:14 PM) ninael88: [You know, he could say what his daily life actually included, but he doesn't think the guy would appreciate the lesson. No, it's best to keep tight-lipped about certain things. This is just one of them.]
Lay low and keep the target off of your back, that's what. We don't even know what this trial is going to be about. I doubt the "communists" are going to be revealing themselves tonight. Remember that.
I'm sure another rule will pop up in time. "Anyone who isn't present for the trial shall be executed." You can count on it.
(9:49:16 PM) zeaob: Yeah... Still, I'd like to see the dirty rat that thinks they can get away with murder get what's coming to them. We might as well milk this trial thing for everything it's worth and kill one of them back.
(9:54:35 PM) ninael88: You'd better hope we can, because if not they'll just keep killing until it's just them left and the rest of us are all dead.
Those odds aren't good; you still think you can do it?
[But he's smirking.]
(10:05:26 PM) zeaob: Like I have a choice! I'll be -dead- if I don't do anything! [He stands up from his seat, walking towards the door.]
Who knows, maybe one of them was stupid enough not to wipe their shoes after stepping into all that blood... Heh. A lot of people really are...
(10:21:37 PM) ninael88: [They'll all be dead, more than likely. Greed isn't the sort to go down without a fight, but even he can see the futility in what's happening.]
Maybe so. You should check for shoe prints in the blood, Clay. You might solve this and give them all hell.
[Oh, he's looking forward to this no matter what happens. If he's doomed, he's doomed, but he's not giving up without one hell of a fight.]
(10:31:27 PM) zeaob: And put myself in the spotlight? Heh, and why would I want to do a silly thing like that.
[He looks outside, giving it one last thought.] Maybe if things get too rough, I'll have a little silver bullet in my pocket, hm? [Giving a wave, he turns around and motions to leave the room.]
Where: Greed's room
